The R490 is an RFID reader for automated systems, access control and vehicle access control. It can identify a user from up to 90 centimeters. With special thick RFID cards, the device can reach a reading range of over 100 cm. Its compact size, cost-efficiency and excellent reading range make it a good choice for demanding RFID reading needs. It can be connected to Tamtron Solutions' access control systems or third party control solutions.

The R490 is equipped with an advanced auto-tuning circuitry that compensates for the presence of metal objects in the vicinity of the R490 and for other environmental factors (such as temperature variations) that affect the tuning of the R490's internal antenna and decrease the reading distance. Auto-tuning recovers significant portion of the reading distance that otherwise would have been lost due to the loss of tuning.

The R490 is powered by a two-stage power circuitry: the power adapter that transforms 220 V AC (110 V AC) into 24 V AC, and the power supply that converts 24 V AC into 19.2 V DC required by the R490. The power supply also filters out the power line noise and further stabilizes the voltage supplied to the R490, which is very important to proper reader operation.

With standard ISO cards, the R490's reading range is 90 cm. With special thick ID cards the reading range is over 100 cm.
